Job Description
Working within the Mechanical Engineering Department, the position is to provide a range of mechanical engineering services to the company, often in support of a Project Engineer (Mechanical). This will necessitate duties performed either independently or as part of a project team in conjunction with members of the same and/or other departments.
The Design/Draughting Engineer will be directly responsible to the Mechanical Engineering Manager but will often work under the supervision of a Project Engineer for each particular project.
The Design/Draughting Engineer will be responsible for the production of the following from information supplied by the project engineer, Sales team, the client and collected during the course of the project, using CAD and Desk Top PC methods. General Arrangement Drawings, Detail Drawings, Parts lists, Schematic Diagrams, Project documentation both for internal records and customer use (e.g. Operation Manuals), all to a production level, thus enabling the correct manufacture and assembly of components.
The following is a list of Project related tasks that the Design/Draughting Engineer will be expected to have input into or be involved in:
Attend internal meetings both project and company related, discuss mechanical project specifications/requirements with other disciplines such as Software and Electrical, maintain project files and all related documentation, source and specify bought-out components, discuss requirements with suppliers, order components, support the manufacturing of components both in house and sub-contract, assist when required in the setting up, testing and development of equipment, be involved in customer meetings both at the office and on site. Occasionally some sales support, eg creating concept drawings, may be required.
You will be expected to comply with current safe working practise and all relevant standards in your work, (e.g. Health and Safety requirements, British Standards etc.)
From time to time a Design/Draughting Engineer may be called upon to visit a customer’s site to support, service or diagnose faults within a machine. Support for other departments both at offices and on-site may also be required. Occasionally some hands on assistance will be required during the build, development and commissioning phases of projects. You may be asked to contribute to the management of the projects that you are involved in. Occasionaly you will be asked to provide technical assistance to the sales department both in the preparation of quotations and discussions with clients. From time to time you may be asked to perform other duties. A flexible approach will be expected in tackling any requirement that should arise.
The Design/Draughting Engineer will be totally responsible for all aspects of a project that they have been tasked with and authorised to purchase parts under the supervision of the Project Engineer to the predetermined budget of each project, on an as required basis. You will be expected to negotiate cost effective purchases compatible with the technical specifications required and where appropriate, scheduled to meet project timescale requirements. You will work under the direct supervision of the Department Manager and Project Manager for project related issues.
