Job Description
Working within the Mechanical Engineering Department, the position is to provide a range of mechanical engineering services. This will necessitate duties performed either independently or as part of a project team in conjunction with members of the same and/or other departments.
The Project Engineer (Mechanical) will be directly responsible to the Mechanical Engineering Manager but will often work under the coordination of a Project Manager for each particular project.
To provide Mechanical Engineering solutions and designs for products. This will necessitate taking responsibility for the mechanical aspects of projects through all phases from conception to commissioning.
To work with project team members under the coordination of Project Managers to fulfil the necessary planning, review and costing exercises deemed necessary. In this way you will be expected to contribute to the management of the projects that you are involved in.
To be responsible for the generation of Project related documentation using Desk Top PC methods from information supplied by the Sales team, the Client and collected during the course of the project, for example; Technical Construction File with a complete safe working design, General Arrangement Drawings, Detail Drawings, Parts lists, Schematic Diagrams, Project documentation both for internal records and customer use (e.g. Operation Manuals), Machine Specification Summary, all to a production level, thus enabling the correct manufacture, assembly and future maintenance and operation of equipment. There will be other documentation not listed which is as important to the project and company as those listed.
Attend internal and external meetings, both Project and Company related, Sales department liaison, and initial concept design with input into costing and timescale reviews.
Adherence to client specification, client liaison at an engineering level, and working with the rest of the project team at all times. System design resulting in the documentation detailed above.
Check, test and develop the functionality of the system to gain satisfactory approval.
You will be expected to comply with current safe working practises and all relevant standards in your work, (e.g. Health and Safety Executive, British Standards, internal standards and procedures etc).
From time to time you may be called upon to visit a customer’s site to service, or diagnose a fault within a machine.
Support for other departments both at offices and on-site may also be required.
Occasionally some hands on assistance will be required during the build, development and commissioning phases of projects.
You will also contribute to the day to day running and organisation of the Mechanical Engineering Department.
You will be expected to contribute to the management of the projects that you are involved in.
Occasionally you will be asked to provide technical assistance to the sales department both in the preparation of quotations and discussions with clients.
From time to time you may be asked to perform other duties.
A flexible approach will be expected in tackling any requirement that should arise.
The Project Engineer (Mechanical) will be totally responsible for all Mechanical aspects of projects, and authorised to purchase parts to the predetermined budget of each project on an as required basis.
You will be expected to negotiate cost effective purchases compatible with the technical specifications required and where appropriate, scheduled to meet project timescale requirements.
You will work under the direct supervision of the Department Manager, and Project Manager for Project related issues.
Very similar to the design engineer except they have the overall design responsibility for the mechanical aspects of the project or projects that they are working on. They will be liaising with all members of the team just as the design engineer but providing guidance on the mechanical aspects of the design. They will be responsible for the work / output from the design engineer that is working with them. Again as the design engineer they will also be involved in the development of the equipment and maintenance of the supporting documentation.
Knowledge of 3D CAD system preferably Solidworks.
The minimum qualification required would be a HND in Mechanical engineering, preferably a degree but I would, provided they had a very strong engineering background accept a HNC.
This position will be required to visit and meet customers at different times and phases of a project, whether it be at the initial concept and design stage, pass-off stage and or installation and after support stage. So the ability to travel 90 % of the time in the UK will be required.
