Our client designs and manufactures leading edge industrial products used in a variety of different around the world. The products are complex and incorporate a variety of disciplines within the R&D department: mechanical, electronics, fluid dynamics, & materials.This role is responsible for designing the mechanical components that, along with electronics, will be assembled to produce a product in their world-class manufacturing facility near Cambridge.You will work as part of the product development team with specific responsibility for mechanical, functional and industrial design of the individual components and assemblies of the product. The role covers the entire lifecycle of the product from initial concept through design, validation, field trials and release into production.You will provide technical leadership within the mechanical design function by designing products and being a catalyst for developing design skills, tools and techniques within R&D.Key Accountabilities:Understand the requirements and design mechanical elements and generate innovative and functional design conceptsWork in partnership with suppliers to ensure that components and assemblies can be manufactured by them to the dimensions and tolerances required.To be regarded by peers as a specialist whose knowledge can be trusted with a high degree of confidenceEnsuring knowledge is captured and transferred via creation of design guidelines and standardsAgree to and maintain deadlines.Key Challenges:Understanding how customers use products and the issues they faceUnderstanding cross-functional interaction between mechanical parts, electronics, and fluidsProducing verifiable data to support design assumptionsYou willUnderstand the functionality of the components and ensure that design for manufacture complements their overall function and the function of the product.Take responsibility for mechanical designs, ensuring they can be manufactured consistently and perform consistently in the field.Have structured thinking with use of data to prove assumptionsCapture and detail work by way of written and verbal communication.Be a team player with ability to negotiate and influence individuals and project teams.Have a Bachelors degree in a recognised engineering discipline e.g. Mechanical / Industrial Design, Material science, PhysicsHave at least 5 years experience on products of similar complexity e.g. precision electro-mechanical, high reliability and industrial environmentsHave expert knowledge of solid component manufacturing techniques, including (but not limited to), injection moulding, machining (metals / plastics / ceramics), rapid prototyping (including SLA/SLS modelling)Have a structured approach to mechanical design (working with requirements, FMEAs, problem solving, material selection etc).Be fully conversant with:Geometric dimensioning and tolerancingTolerance analysis (worst case and statistical)Material selectionFundamental stress and thermal analysis
